Thanks(elizabeth) After conducting research on the topic of date rape, I was saddened by a lack of recent research on this topic. The few articles that were relevant on the topic of date rape were all in the 90’s. However, I still believe that this is a very real and relevant issue, whether victims realize it or not. In the 90’s, I feel as if our society was not so consumed with the topic of sex and in today’s society where even middle-schoolers are vastly educated and consumed by the topic. Our society today has less respect for sex and does not see sex the way God intended it. 2 Timothy 2:22 (ESV) says, “So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” Fifteen years ago, you heard of more couples vowing to remain pure until marriage. Even in the church today, it is rare to see such vows taken seriously. Our world is so consumed with sex – we see half naked men and women on commercials, movies are consumed with sex scenes, and couples today often live together to make sure they enjoy being with each other sexually before they plan to marry. Radio stations are full of cheating “prank” calls, to see whether girlfriends and boyfriends are cheating on one another. Date rape is still an issue in today’s society as young men and women often deem it as part of their job description to offer themselves up on the first or second date, and if they do not, they are often forced or guilted into it. In today’s society, you are not “socially accepted” if you are not sexually active. According to an analysis on date rape by Humphreys, et al. (1996), there are several factors that influence date rape, including culture, context, interpersonal factors, and sexual communication and miscommunication (p. 70-71). Culture, as aforementioned plays a pivotal role in the ideals of sex in the dating realm. According to Humphreys (1996), “Men are taught to pursue sexual activity with reluctant women because women’s ‘no’ response may be a token, resulting from the female script of needing to appear reluctant” (Humphreys et al., 1996, p. 70). According to Gillen and Muncer (1995), communication or a lack of communication plays a pivotal role in the subject of date rape. Females, for example, who dress immodestly or make sexual advances toward a male, is sending a message to the male. Actions, attitudes, and reactions all play a role in the communication realm of the dating relationship. This is one of the many reasons that male and females alike should let their actions and reactions reflect their thoughts so they do not mislead others. 1 Timothy 2:9 (NIV) reminds us, “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes.” Therefore, our society today lives with the mindset of sexual fulfillment and too often, people will do whatever they can to fulfill their needs. It is vital for male and females to make serious considerations when beginning to date. First, Christians should date people who hold the same values. Second, females should consider how they dress and what message they are sending by what they wear. Third, our society needs Jesus and needs the values of purity, modesty, and Christ-centered dating to come to light.care whether I learned but seemed more interested in teacher evaluations and punching the time clock. My success was due to a passionate and interested third-party, a counselor provided by the Human Services Department of Los Angeles, that I was able to visualize a better future. She saw my needs, guided my training, and taught me to help others.
