Discuss how you can improve your health and longevity in light of your findings in these questionnaires, your understanding of epigenetics, and your knowledge of your family history.
Watch the epigenetics video from PBS (if you have trouble loading the video, go to YouTube and search for “epigenetics and nova” in the search area). Begin your paper by defining epigenetics in your own words and discussing your reaction to the video.
Interview your family members and complete the Family History-Dr. Oz.pdf. Find out which disease you are most at risk for. Using the College Library in person or online (log in with your MDC ID — the one that’s a 10-digit number — to conduct your research; your password is the last 4 digits of your MDC ID), research the concept of epigenetics and the disease you discovered runs in your family. Your password is the last four digits of your MDC ID unless you have changed it). Research and locate one article on epigenetics and that disease (select a study on research conducted on humans, not plants or insects) from a reputable academic source:
Reputable Sources:
journal articles
government publications based on research
Do not use:
magazines of any sort
Wikipedia
Online websites (including websites on epigenetics)
Be sure to find a reputable journal article on the epigenetics topic of worth to you. For example, is there a family history of cancer, heart disease, diabetes in your family? If so, find an article on epigenetics and that topic so it is useful to you.
Read the epigenetics article you find. Continue your paper with a discussion of the epigenetics article. Be sure to paraphrase (put things in your own words) and be sure to cite the author(s) of the article you find using APA style (see the section in the Instructions for Reaction paper document in the Introduction Unit on using APA style); you must cite the author and year of the study within the body of the paper where you discuss that person’s ideas and also place the full reference at the end in a Reference List). Aim for about a page for this part of your paper.Complete the Living to 100 Questionnaire. You do NOT have to submit the questionnaire. What you are required to do is to discuss and integrate your findings into your discussion 1n the paper. Aim for another page.
Discuss how you can improve your health and longevity in light of your findings in these questionnaires, your understanding of epigenetics, and your knowledge of your family history. This should be your final page. This is the MOST important part!
