Purpose of this assignment:
This assignment provides learners with an opportunity to develop the skills needed to devise and
implement their knowledge of design principles in a context of a project encompassing construction of
residential units, commercial units and services.
This assignment also enables the application of knowledge, understanding and skills developed in
other units, and where possible experiences from work. Learners will also develop skills to carry out
evaluations of their own work and be able to present suitable solutions.
PART A (LO1, LO2, O3) – Due Week 10
Scenario
You work for an engineering company of your choice as a Trainee Engineer. This can be a company
you work for or a company you have researched. Due to the rapid expansion of your company, a few graduate
engineers were recruited to join the team to work on a new contract which was recently awarded to your
company.
You were asked to prepare brief notes to be presented to your new colleagues outlining the important
factors and considerations that will affect the design, planning and construction of the project.
Later, with the help of your colleagues, sketch a proposal.

Glossary
Analyse: Break an issue into its constituent parts. Look in depth at each part using supporting arguments and
evidence for and against as well as how these interrelate to one another.
Compare: Identify the similarities and differences between two or more phenomena. Say if any of the shared
similarities or differences are more important than others. ‘Compare’ and ‘contrast’ will often feature together in an
essay question.
Evaluate: Give your verdict as to what extent a statement or findings within a piece of research are true, or to what
extent you agree with them. Provide evidence taken from a wide range of sources which both agree with and contradict
an argument. Come to a final conclusion, basing your decision on what you judge to be the most important factors and
justify how you have made your choice.
Discuss: Essentially this is a written debate where you are using your skill at reasoning, backed up by carefully
selected evidence to make a case for and against an argument, or point out the advantages and disadvantages of a
given context. Remember to arrive at a conclusion.
