Describe the cultural beliefs and biases of your chosen subculture, as well as some of their norms and taboos.
Another key cultural concept is norms, which are rules that tell people what behavior
is or is not acceptable (Ferris & Stein, 2020). Norms might be formal, such
as codified laws, or informal, such as the unspoken understanding that one
should not pick his or her nose in public. Norms are relative, meaning, they
vary by culture, time period, and situation. In some areas of Japan, for
example, eating basashi, or raw horse meat sashimi, is considered a delicacy.
It is an accepted behavior. In America, however, eating raw horse meat would be
considered a violation of a social norm. It would be considered unacceptable.
In fact, this behavior would be taboo in American culture, as horses are
domesticated and are considered to be well-respected animals. A taboo is a serious violation of a social norm.
