ASSIGNMENT 1 DETAILS
The following notes will help you to complete Assignment 1.
- Select one topic from the topics given- Brain development and play or culture and play
Read the question carefully to understand the requirements and then start researching the topic.
Refer to recent textbooks, journal articles, and research reports published in the last 5-10 years.
Make sure you refer to a range of references, not just textbooks, and avoid using information from
general internet sites to support your discussion.
Avoid as much as possible, using direct quotes in your essay. Try, instead, to paraphrase and synthesise
information from various sources.
Include all references (including page numbers) used in the preparation of your essay. Appropriately
acknowledge all sources used in the essay and provide details of references in the reference list at the
end. There are serious consequences if you fail to acknowledge readings used in the essay.
Read articles or chapters in depth and it will help to synthesise your ideas related to the topic. Develop
a clear argument and use the information to support it. Refer to further readings to build on your
initial argument or answers, if needed.
- Prepare a draft. An essay has a structure with three main parts: Introduction, Body and Conclusion.
The Introduction gives an overview of the essay topic. It briefly states what the topic is, and what is
going to be discussed in detail in the essay (objectives). The length of an introduction is usually one
paragraph.
The Body elaborates on the ideas or topics or issues mentioned briefly in the introduction. It presents
an analysis or argument of ideas supported by theory and literature. This section also covers issues and
implications for early childhood practices, drawn from the analysis
Organize your discussion clearly in different paragraphs. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence
that introduces the content of the information in that paragraph. Avoid long paragraphs and leave
space between each paragraph. Limit discussion in each paragraph to one idea and ensure information
presented in each paragraph is complete. Also, make sure there is flow in the writing and link the ideas
in different paragraphs coherently with each other.
The Conclusion presents a well-balanced summary of the points drawn from the discussion and analysis
of various ideas. Do not bring new ideas or quotes into this section and avoid repeating what has been
said already in the introduction. The length of a conclusion is usually a paragraph.

- Review and finalise your essay. It is always a good idea to write the first draft and leave it aside for
later reviewing. When you spend a lot of time working on your essay, you can become too familiar with
it and you may not be able to identify any errors in your writing. Revise and finalise it after leaving it
aside for a few days. Also, check the due date /s and submit it on the due date via Turnitin. Attach the list of all references to the essay. There is no hardcopy submission.
- Submit your draft with the body of the essay completed to Turnitin.
- Please note you will not be penalised if you do not submit your draft by the due date/time.
However, if you submit it on time, you will have time to refine your draft.
- Refine your draft based on the Originality Report.
- Submit the final copy to Turnitin.
REMEMBER, THE QUALITY OF YOUR ESSAY (AND THUS YOUR GRADE) DEPENDS ON THE SOUNDNESS OF THE ARGUMENT,
SYNTHESIS, AND SUPPORT FROM THEORY AND LITERATURE. EXPRESSION IS ALSO VITALLY IMPORTANT AS ERRORS IN
WRITING WILL MAKE YOUR ESSAY UNREADABLE, AND YOU WILL LOSE MARKS.
