cultural artifacts and Marxism

cultural artifacts and Marxism

The purpose of this course is to help you see that any cultural artifact is a text that can be read. In order to help us read texts, there are a number of theories that can guide our observations. For this essay, you will select a song, television episode, or movie, and read it as a text. What is the purpose of this text? What does it tell us about society? What does it tell us about the times in which it was created? What is it actually saying?
Instructions:
1. Choose a movie, song, or television episode. If you are having a difficult time choosing one, email me for suggestions.
2. Briefly (less than 2 pages) and in entirely your own words, describe the content of the text (main characters, plot, setting in the case of a narrative, or a description of the lyrics in the case of a song). Either using Freudian analysis or Marxist analysis, explain the subtext that runs through the text. A brief description of the theory you are using should be included (at least 2 pages). What can we learn about society from this text (at least 1 page)? Make sure you also include a title page and bibliography / works cited page.
