WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?
To complete Assignment One you must submit an academic
essay on the following topic:
Rita McGraph (2013) suggests that nearly all contemporary
strategy frameworks and tools are based on the supposition
that strategy’s purpose is to achieve sustainable competitive
advantage. She concludes that organisation executives need
to stop basing their business strategies on this concept.
Instead organisations need to achieve their goals in a
different way given today’s fast moving competitive
environment. In her book ‘The End of Competitive
Advantage’ , McGraph challenges the conventional thinking
about this concept and in this essay you are to critically
discuss the ideas proposed in her book.
Your analysis should include both theoretical and contextual
developments in this concept area and also its relationship
with human resource strategy and how such a perspective
has application to understanding the behaviour of business
enterprises with respect to the practice of HRM. In this
respect you should consider how current HRM policies and

practices that are used strategically could be affected by
these developments in thinking. Your evaluation must be
supported by references from academic publications that are
in support of, or alternatively refute her ideas. You are asked
to provide a comprehensive conclusion to your evaluation.

Remember to use an essay format. Your essay should
contain an introduction to the topic, a main body of
discussion and a conclusion that draws together all the main
points made in your discussion of the topic. (Note – you do
