 Paper 2:  Critical Summary

Summaries involve putting the main idea(s) of a text into one’s own words for one’s own purpose. They are significantly shorter than the original as they point to what is particularly necessary and relevant within the source material. They may repeat key words and phrases that are crucial to the text, but they do so in order to bring focus to larger ideas.

 

A summary will:

 

* pull out main ideas.

* focus on key detail, use key words and phrases.

* break down larger ideas.

* exclude details that are not pertinent to supporting the main ideas.

 

A summary will not:

 

*be your opinion, no first person!

*describe the text

* repeat everything in the original

* neglect important information essential to the text’s claim

*add in points that are not in the text

 

For Short Paper #2, use notes from our class discussions, group work and your annotated paper in order to write a critical summary of Darko Suvin’s “Estrangement and Cognition.” Follow the outline I provide below. Your summaries will only be 3 paragraphs.

 

Papers should be 1-2 double-spaced pages with 1-inch margins and 12 point font, Times New Roman. Make sure you use MLA format. Bring 2 hard copies with you to class for Peer Review.

 

Outline:

Include why Suvin’s argument matters, or “the Stakes”

 

Paragraph Two:           Discuss why Science Fiction cannot be categorized as

Discuss why Science Fiction is different from fantasy

 

Paragraph Three:         Explain how Science Fiction works as the “literature of cognitive

Estrangement”

Use Galileo’s quote to demonstrate how cognitive estrangement works

Explain why this matters, why it’s important
