Activity Description
Parents have a unique contribution to make in their children’s schooling. They have a different knowledge about the child from what the teacher has. They know the child’s physical, medical, social, and intellectual histories. Parents bring with them a sense of continuity about the child. They provide the context with which the teacher can use to view the whole child.
For this assignment, you have read about family involvement in early childhood education. Reflect on what you have learned about research on family involvement; families as learning environments; building partnerships with families; tenets of successful family-school programs; and linking families, communities, and early childhood programs. Identify a legislative topic that affects the education of young children. In two separate files, submit the following:
Create an outline for a workshop that could be presented at a parent evening. Include the following components:
• Workshop focus and topic (see above)
• Workshop goals
• Workshop outcomes
• Methods of presentation for the workshop
• Workshop content with details (be specific and include all topics that you intend to present to the parents)
• Evaluation
• Next steps
Outline Length: 10-12 pages, including three scholarly resources. You must include your textbook as one of the resources.

Activity Description
To accompany your parent workshop, create an informational brochure that briefly presents the highlights of your topic. This brochure should contain additional information that will help the parents to better understand the topic and provide them with sources for more information.
• You may want to include subheads, captions, a logo, graphics, graphs, charts, tables, and/or FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions).
• Your brochure should be appealing to a diverse population, including parents of special needs students and English Language learners.
Brochure length: 2-sided tri-fold brochure (8.5×14 page) presenting the requested information. Three scholarly resources are required. You must include your textbook as one of the resources.

Teachers in the early years should have very close working relationships with the parents of their children. The partnership in education between parents and teachers has a long history, with each partner recognizing the unique part he or she plays in the child’s life. The value of sharing the information they have about the child highlights their separate but important functions. Overall, when schools, families, and community groups work together to support learning, children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer, and like school more.
Assignment Preparation
1. Review all assigned chapters and resources throughout the course.
2. Reflect on the following questions: Are there minorities in your school setting? How are these parents supported or not supported by school practices and policies? What changes would you make? Why is it important for early childhood teachers to build partnerships with parents? Interview several parents. What do they say are the most critical issues they face?
3. Consider the value of a family-centered parent education program.
