“How does a country’s national language policy affect the curriculum and instructional approaches of a school or a university in that country?”
Genre of a Research Report:
Part A is a research report of approximately 1000 words in length. In this case, the term
‘research report’ simply refers to a formal academic essay that may be structured according to sub-headings. You will need an introduction to your report, in which you state your purpose and provide a brief outline of what is to follow. Next, you will work through each component of the task in the body of your research report. The individual components are:
- a) defining the context
- b) examining national language policy
- c) examining curriculum and instructional practices
- d) considering the relationship between policy and curriculum.

To finish, you will need to provide a conclusion to your research report that summarises the major findings.
Detailed Instructions for Assignment One:
This assignment asks you to select a particular TESOL context and answer the following:
“How does a country’s national language policy affect the curriculum and instructional approaches of a school or a university in that country?”
Part A:

- b) examining national language policy: (A brief description of the national
language policy regarding EFL/ESL AND identification of the values that underpin this
policy and their link to sociocultural context
- c) examining curriculum and instructional practices: (A brief overview of curriculum processes, with some reference to values and goals and the type of language learning/teaching emphasised)
- d) considering the relationship between policy and curriculum: (A description of how/whether the goals and views embedded within policy are reflected in the curriculum)
To finish, you will need to provide a conclusion to your research report that summarises the major findings.

Part B:
In order to provide a brief overview of your report, you are asked to
summarise your key findings into a powerpoint presentation and upload this to
the discussion board under the appropriate thread.
Your presentation need not be anything too elaborate but try to ensure that it is engaging and provides useful links and/or questions to stimulate your audience to think about the connection between policy and sociocultural context.
