College Homework Help|Essay on Strategic Decisions
Executive Information System (EIS) is the software that provides a powerful and simple tool that allows to view and analyze key factors and performance trends different. It allows to see both the summary and detail level data which makes it easier to understand not only individual elements but also to take control of the big picture. It allows to display summarized data that reflects the overall status of the company. EIS helps the user to identify events which had an effect on the current situation of the company. Before the situation becomes critical and costly to the company IES spotlights areas that need attention and highlights key performance indicators. It is flexible which allows the user to signal uncontrolled situations with used-defined upper and lower limit alarms. Features of software are the following: multi-dimensional views of the Trax extracts, displays current information graphically or as a text, independent of database (out of office can be used as laptops), prompt further exploration in the areas ranking, performance, net changes, etc., enables informed decision making.
Strategic Information System (SIS) “is a networked, integrated system, available and supportive to users, related to business strategy, enable the business-business driven.” (Pant and Hsu, 1995, 4). This is the system that needs to cater to the strategic demands of the organization such as serving the business goals and creating competitive advantages as well as meeting their data processing and MIS needs. This system has the features of the EIS plus the ability to perform tasks according to the general strategy of the company.
The costs for adopting the SIS are big but the consequence of such adoption are (1) improving decision-making at all levels by providing better quality, more relevant, and more timely data and information which is delivered to the right people at the right time, (2) simplification and automation of processes, tasks, and transactions which increase speed, lower costs and improve productivity and quality, and finally (3) improving integration of employees and customers by connecting them in a new ways over large geographic areas and organizational boundaries. The cost and time for adopting the SIS would directly relate to the size of the specification, staffing levels and specialists and other resources that will be needed in the development of the project. The general formula for cost estimation is the following: Effort x (Salary + Burden)= Costs. If we will take as an example Minnesota Department of Natural Resources we can approximately present the costs for our company. The costs for Minnesota for the years 2000-2001 were $10,200,000. As we can see it is not the cheap pleasure but we can also see that there is a already written budget till the year 2007 which means that the company benefited from this invention, that this is a long-term investment that can make the work of the company more efficient. (Minnesota Dep. Of Natural Resources, 2000). In order to estimate the time period that will be needed to adopt the SIS we ca use the following formula: Effort/Staff=Time Period. As for the already mentioned company the time for adopting the full SIS was from 3 to 5 years. Because our firm is not so scale and big the costs and amount of time needed will be much less then the one of MDoNR. From my point of view we will need from 1 to 2 years and correspondently about $200,000 – $300,000. But don’t be confused with such numbers. These are only estimations which can further lead to even greater profits and better organized work. It will support and shape the competitive strategy of the organization. It may also function as management information system or a management support system.
If we will compare the two systems the first one (EIS) will luck one of the biggest features, it will not arrange the performance with the strategy of the company, it will not give results with the look for the future. What it can do is to summarize the already performed data and to divide it into peaces for somebody to analyze it. This system is intended to cut costs. But the SIS is intended to add value. With SIS your plans and strategies for the period more then one can be adopted to the Information Technologies in the company. It maximizes improvements in mission performance and in this way helps the company to highly perform in the strong competition conditions.
