Research Report: Compulsory Requirements

A major component of the research assessment task is the drafting process. Furthermore, the drafting process will enable teachers to know that the report is your own work.

  • A draft of each section of the report must be submitted through the Turnitin link on Moodle by the due dates as stated in the Unit 2 Weekly Planner. This is divided into Question 1, Question 2 and Question 3. Students will receive detailed feedback from their teacher for the Question 1 draft. This feedback will include details based on a Turnitin system report which verifies the percentage of text that is not original. Students are expected to reflect on feedback provided for Question 1 and incorporate advice given into their Question 2 and 3 drafts. Students will receive feedback for Questions 2 and 3 drafts based on a Turnitin system report which verifies the percentage of text that is not original.

  • Teachers may require drafts to be resubmitted. The teacher will notify the student by email if this is the case.

·         Individual class teachers will inform their students about the submission requirements and dates for the drafts of the Introduction, Conclusion, Self Evaluation and Appendix sections.

  • Students will have the opportunity to make changes to their report (if necessary) before submitting a final copy.

  • Students’ FINAL reports must be submitted through Turnitin via the link on Moodle to be scanned for plagiarism.

  • Individual teachers can also choose to have their students submit a hard copy version.

  • Students must submit a signed assessment cover sheet.

Please note:

·         Failure to submit drafts of ALL sections will result in a fail.

  • Teachers will maintain a record for each student’s topic, progress and submissions of each section.

  • Students must attend at least 80% of classes during this period or provide a doctor’s certificate to support an extended absence from class. Students who arrive late or who have an extended absence (supported by medical certificate or other evidence) can apply for an extension. An extension and alternative arrangements will be considered by the Head of Studies and Subject coordinator.

  • Students will not be granted consideration of disadvantage for IT issues e.g. laptop dying, or corruption of a USB stick. It is the individual student’s responsibility to back up their work in multiple places.

  • The final report must reflect the drafts submitted and subsequent teacher feedback.

·         Marks will be allocated to the drafting process as per the marking rubric.

  • The expected number of references used is 10 to 12.

  • In the unlikely event of a student being unable to submit their report electronically or print a hard copy (due to illness or IT issues) on the due date, they MUST email their teacher a copy.

  • If a student’s work is lost or irretrievable due to I.T. issues and a consideration of disadvantage is granted, drafts MAY be used for the assessment. In such circumstances, this would be subject to approval by the Head of Studies.

Unit 2 Research Report: How to Write the Report Findings to your Questions (Body)

Your teacher will give you a due date for completion of each question. You must adhere to these dates, as the drafting process is a compulsory requirement of the research project.

Once your teacher has approved your research topic, your three questions and sources, you are ready to start your research.

‘Breaking Down’ the task

Research can be daunting and it is important that you do not become overwhelmed with the task. To ensure that this does not happen, you should ‘break down’ the task into manageable and achievable segments.

You must also remember to be strategic when approaching your research. Much of the source material will not be relevant to your questions, and you need to find the relevant information. You do not need to read everything on your topic, only content that refers to your three questions. Therefore, understand your questions fully and their purpose before you begin.

Tip: Before writing anything, ensure that you have read a variety of different sources and made notes.

Step 1: Begin researching your questions.

  • Use the template on the following pages for each of your research questions.

  • B. If you do not submit the templates, you will not pass the assessment task.

Use this template for each research question.

A draft for each question must be submitted to your teacher.

Make sure the notes you make refer directly to your research question.

Use dot points, headings/ subheadings/ incomplete sentences.

If you want to quote directly, underline and note the page number- to help you when in-text referencing.
