Assignment 2: Individual Learning Journal / Weekly Seminar Participation

Assessment weighting:
50% of ISYS3300 total grade
• 30% of this is based on the final Individual Learning Journal compilation AND
• 20% of this is based on in-class submissions of “Live Tweets”
Part A – Compilation of an Individual Learning Journal (30% weighting)
Commencing with Week 3, personal reflections of your learning experience for each of the remaining weeks of the course must be entered in written form into a blog to be set up within the course site on Blackboard (i.e. myRMIT Studies). Altogether, there should be 10 distinct blog entries by the end of the course.
Each weekly journal entry should be around 300 words in length. Your posts must be course-related in some way and not simply be irrelevant thoughts included to fill up space. The best posts are ones that are philosophical in nature: Question the ethical underpinnings of some relevant scenario that you encounter in class or in real-life and support your thoughts with any suitable theory that aids in explanation. The key question in philosophy is “Why?” Your posts should deal with this in some creative manner…
For example, in your own words, these are some of the many relevant questions that could be addressed in your blog postings:
1) What have I learnt this week in ISYS3300 that interests me and why is this so?
2) What have I learnt this week in ISYS3300 that irritates me and why is this so?

3) What have I discovered this week in other courses that I am studying that is related to
any of the themes in ISYS3300?
4) What issues or theories covered in this week’s course agenda are of relevance to any
working life situations experienced either past or present?
5) What have I read this week related to ISYS3300 in terms of journal articles and
excerpts from books? (Here’s where you can include bite-size summaries of your
readings.)
6) What news items, books, magazine articles, works of art, poems, graphic novels,
computer games, songs, films or TV programs have I discovered this week that are of
relevance to ISYS3300?
7) Write a short story in parable form that addresses some issue regarding professional
issues, ethics and practice. A parable is a brief story, in prose or verse, which
illustrates one or more instructive values or ethical lessons. Perfect for 300 words!
(How to write a parable: http://www.ehow.com/how_2331329_write-parable.html )
8) If you encounter an ethical dilemma (or issue) during the week, see if you can relate it
to a proverb to give the situation some meaning in a written description. (What is a
proverb? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proverb )
9) Describe, in anonymous language, any ethical dilemma (or issue) that you may have
dealt with during the week either at home, university or in the workplace. How was
this resolved? Could this be related in any way to ethical frameworks or ideas covered
in ISYS3300?
10) Be creative! Use a tool such as http://www.ericthecircle.com or http://www.xtranormal.com to make a commentary on something course-related. You
would need to post a link to your creation on the blog AND you would still need to
write at least 300 words on why you took this approach.
11) Sometimes when you are making a blog entry it might be worthwhile to remember
the “Five Ws”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Ws
Grading Details for the Final Compilation of the Individual Learning Journal:
Marks for the Final Compilation of the Individual Learning Journal will awarded through SELF-ASSESSMENT.
A broad checklist of assessment guideline areas for the final compilation of the individual learning journal component of assignment 2 are listed below. Prior to submission of the final compilation of your learning journal, these are to be used in conjunction with this entire specification to determine a numeric mark out of 30 for your final compilation.

For additional guidance in self-assessment, you are also encouraged to use the generic marking criteria scheme which is available in the ISYS3300 course guide. Your final compilation grade (a numeric mark out of 30) should be submitted with your final submission in an ATTACHED document that also features a written justification for the final compilation mark. This written explanation should be no longer than 300 words in length and should clearly outline why your final compilation is deserving of the particular mark allocated through self-assessment.
