Intended Learning Outcomes of Fundamentals of Aeronautical Engineering
- Describe the fundamental technical & Aviation Safety Regulatory Framework. Explain the fundamental aeronautical principles involved in the aerodynamics of flight, aircraft structures and development.
- Outline industry’s achievements since the introduction of jet engine aircraft and develop a broad knowledge of the aircraft’s life cycle.
- Explain the business approach to the development of a new aircraft. Outline stages related to project funding, testing and production.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the industry profile of the major manufacturers of civil transport aircraft. Present their latest achievements with respect to design innovation and industry support.
- Explain the role of aircraft engine manufacturers in Civil Aerospace industry. Describe products and services for wide body, narrow body, corporate and regional aircraft.
- Identify the concept of Sustainable Aviation and underline the steps taken towards environmental innovation.
- Assessment Brief
The following Coursework aims to evaluate your research and basic knowledge skills on aeronautics according to the given scenario:
‘You are working as an aviation consultant in a consultancy group based in Stevenage, UK. Your team has been assigned a project to provide a comprehensive recommendation report to XYZ Low Cost carrier/operator based in Istanbul-Turkey. In the beginning, XYZ operator is willing to lease two (2) aircrafts either B737-700 winglets or A320-214 sharklets. Both aircraft type variants are offered already to be leased at the same price/cost per unit. In addition, XYZ is willing to start its operations in June 2015, by opening the route Istanbul – Birmingham, UK twice daily. Your team director – as part of the overall team project – has trusted you to accomplish certain tasks that will mainly provide aircraft performance estimates, aircraft comparison and aircraft/airport operational data’.
By making use of official data only (i.e. Airbus, Boeing, EASA, CAA, FAA, NATS, EUROCONTROL, etc.) and by following a structured individual report the following six (6) tasks should be provided to your team director:
- Aircraft type critical technical data/specifications comparison. Provide a spread sheet (MS Excel) and relevant graphs (and/or Ms Office Word) tables showing and comparing (at least) the following for both B737-700 and A320-214:
- Total orders for the aircraft type (and variant if applicable)
- Total deliveries for the aircraft type (and variant if applicable)
- Aircrafts in operation for the aircraft type (and variant if applicable)
- Customers/operators list
- Maximum Range
- Engines powered
- Dimensions and Key data
- Maximum payload
- Passenger seating capacity in 2-class configuration
- Freight capacity
- Maximum speed in Mach number
- MTOW
- Maximum Landing weight
- Maximum fuel capacity (or usable fuel)
- Cabin layout
- Fuel flows for climbing and descend for any typical aircraft velocity.
- Aircraft type performance estimate, showing relevant values (min requested: take-off and landing distances, take-off and landing speeds, climb, cruise and descend/approach speeds, ROC, ROD, MTOW, estimated total trip distance in nautical miles, estimated total flight time, fuel remaining assuming max payload on take-off and 400lbs used for taxiing etc.). Based on the previous relevant values found, provide a typical drawing showing the Flight Profile and flight segments for both aircrafts examined as follows:
- Take off from Istanbul (MTOW)
- Initial climb to 15000 feet (FL150)
- Cruise for 30NM at FL 150
- Climb to 25000 feet (FL250)
- Cruise 80 NM at FL250
- Climb to 38000 feet (FL380)
- Level off and cruise FL380 until 120NM from Birmingham airport
- Descend at 15000 feet
- Holding at FL150 for 5 minutes
- Approach and Land in Birmingham airport
- EASA TCs for both aircraft variants, however only the relevant to the aircraft pages need to be included in the report by highlighting the relevant text.
- In a Table format provide EASA ADs and EADs since 01 Dec 2012 that affect both aircraft variants examined accompanied with a short description for each directive, required action(s) and compliance time(s).
- Birmingham aerodrome official chart and BHX airport declared distances (i.e. TORA, TODA, ASDA, LDA) retrieved from official textual data.
- Identify key areas to look out for, when buying/leasing an aircraft in general (i.e. MRO, costs, reputation, reliability, powerplants, fuel consumption, range, MTOW, seating configurations etc). Based on the key areas identified above, provide an appraisal/critique by prioritising and explaining in an essay format the key factors (with decision weights) affecting your final team recommendation to XYZ Company. Assuming B737-700 and A320-214 lease aircraft life cycle is 12 years: 2013-2025. (max. 2000 words for task 6).
Finally, your individual report should be structured with the following format:
- Front cover page
- Table of Contents
- List of abbreviations
- Executive Summary (max 150 words)
- Introduction (max 250 words)
- Main Body of the report (Tasks 1-6)
- Findings and final Recommendations (max 350 words)
- Conclusion (max 150 words)
