Aboriginal Education – Structured Essay

Aboriginal Education – Structured Essay

Task Description:
Sport is a fishbowl for sociocultural norms and thus PDHPE/Dance teachers are easily drawn into potentially politically charged debates. In doing so it is possible that PDHPE teachers can unwittingly contribute to harmful and anti-social elements of Australian society. More specifically, it is possible that topics may come up in PDHPE which give rise to students expressing racist and anti-social attitudes. Given this explain how you would respond to year 10 students discussing the recent racial vilification of Adam Goodes (see media materials on studysmart).

Your explanation must demonstrate your understanding of the following:
1. the contribution of Indigenous sportspeople to Australian sport despite political, cultural and social norms that operated against them
2. the reasons for why sport is a significant avenue for the expression of Indigenous identity
3. your official obligations in responding to student discussion
4. how the PDHPE or Dance curriculum can be used to guide your response to racial vilification your
5. understanding of the graduate teacher standards
Structure your essay so that you cover each of the 4 points above one section at a time. Point 5 is to be viewed holistically and should be addressed implicitly through each of the four points.
Given that this is a personal response it is appropriate to use first person ie ‘I’.
Assessment criteria
In this task students will be assessed on their ability to:
 demonstrate their understanding of the history of racism in Australian sport  link sport to concepts of Aboriginal identity
 analyse how concepts of Aboriginal identity in sport could be linked to improved educational
outcomes for Aboriginal students
 understand DEC policies in relation to Aboriginal education  use PDHPE curriculum to address racism
 translate the graduate teacher standards into practise
I need at least 8-15 % when submitting through “turn it in”
